Damn. These kids, I just don't know. What I wouldn't give to have Peter here. Just for someone to talk to honestly and frankly about what the hell is going on. I'm helping - there's no denying that Pomfrey's been decidedly less stressed since I arrived, but I feel like I'm completely useless against what's happening. The virus seems to be gone, but students are dropping right and left to one malady or another. It was bound to happen, with the quarantine, but it's still a huge, bitter pill to swallow. What they need here is Aurors, not Healers. People who can sort out the evil lurking in the shadows. Not kids. Especially not kids whose eyes are filled with the fog of a war just ended.

[Private to Aurora and Angelina]
So that stuff you two brought me from the greenhouses? I think I've narrowed it down to its base ingredients, and it's definitely looking like the culprit behind all the mist. It looks like it was originally intended to produce a life-like dream between two people rather than the entire population of Hogwarts, but since it went completely wrong, I'm assuming it was made by a student. I haven't yet been able to decipher exactly where the problem occurred - whether it was the spellwork, the potion, or both - but I'm close. I appreciate your bringing it to me, and I'd like your help, Aurora, once I get the solution worked out. It shouldn't take more than a day or two.

How are you feeling since you left the ward? Better, I hope. You'll have to come by sometime for that game of poker.

Just a few notes to expand upon, but otherwise I expect my journal is feeling rather neglected. All the better, though, for the reasons behind my lack of attention. I think I've figured out what's causing the mist and hope to have a solution for it by week's end. I'm sure that should come as good news to most everyone, though I urge you all to continue to exercise caution when on the castle grounds. Never go out alone and always carry your wand, if you're able to use it. If you aren't, go out with someone who is. I say this not to belittle anyone, as I know it's difficult, but I'd hate to say any of you get hurt.
[Private to students]
I was a Gryffindor not long ago, so I know the urge to go looking for someone like Bole. I can't in good conscience tell you not to, because if I were in your shoes, I would do the same thing. But please, please be careful. I'm not necessarily offering to accompany you, but if you absolutely must venture anywhere near the Forbidden Forest, come see me first. I'm available any time of day or night. Just use your heads and don't do anything stupid. Playing the hero all too often gets people killed.

Also, has anyone noticed that the spread of the virus has all but stopped? I've been researching possible remedies and somewhere in the midst of piles of parchment and ancient tomes, I was happy to find that most of the ward's beds are empty. Which means one of two things: either fewer people are getting sick, or they're not telling us. The latter would be very foolish, honestly, just in case it's true.

I must say, it's interesting being back at Hogwarts after all these years. I appreciate the warm welcome I received from a few of you, and I look forward to getting to know the rest (if I haven't already met you at some point). While this will be the first Christmas I've spent away from my family in six years, it's a bit of an adventure. My brother Peter would likely call me crazy (here's hoping he purchases a journal soon), but I'm always in for a challenge. There've been a great many changes since I graduated and I'm enjoying exploring them, for the most part. That said, on to business.
If you should be feeling the least bit poorly over the next few weeks, please do not hesitate to stop by the hospital wing and talk with either Madam Pomfrey or myself. Obviously the virus is spreading, so we'd like to take any precautions possible to slow it down if we can. I brought along a few potions from St. Mungo's that might be of some help, if not to completely cure the virus, then perhaps to lessen some of the discomfort that I understand precedes a loss of magic.
Also, should any of you feel the need to talk to someone, I am always available unless tending to a patient.
